Fix Your Tone

This week on the Beyond Sunday podcast, Steve Buttram, Michael Shearon, Kevin Lee, and Josh Hensley dive into the idea that love is not rude — and how tone, stress, and everyday reactions can either build honor or quietly tear it down. What starts with a fun conversation about how the same phrase can sound completely different quickly turns into a real look at how believers reflect Christ through the way they speak, respond, and treat the people closest to them.
Along the way, the team shares honest stories about marriage, parenting, leadership, and learning to slow down enough to choose grace over impulse. With humor, conviction, and practical wisdom, the episode invites listeners to examine their own tone, embrace humility, and prepare their hearts for what God may be shaping next in their relationships and service.

Living on Purpose - "Be Polite" - 1 Corinthians 13:5; Luke 7:36-50
Pride often begins quietly—as an attitude of the heart—but it eventually shows itself in public ways, including rudeness. Just as patience expresses itself through kindness, pride reveals itself through how we treat others. In Jesus’ visit to the home of Simon the Pharisee, we’re given a striking lesson on courtesy, hospitality, and the spiritual weight of small actions. It’s easy to dismiss polite behavior as insignificant, but Jesus shows us otherwise: the small things are often the big things.

This week on Beyond Sunday, Paxton Redd, Evan Ryan, Josh Hensley, and Michael Shearon gather around the table to unpack Sunday’s message on pride and humility, with plenty of laughter and real-life stories along the way. From snow-shoveling injuries and driveway disasters to a fun game of “I Got This or That’s Not Me,” the conversation disarms listeners while revealing how pride often shows up in subtle, everyday moments. The group reflects on how confidence, competence, and humility can blur together—and how wisdom sometimes means knowing when to step up and when to bow low.
Evan recaps his sermon from Luke 18, contrasting the Pharisee and the tax collector and highlighting three core truths: be honest about your condition, do nothing out of performance, and stay low before God. The discussion deepens as the team explores false humility, conflict, and why our posture before God shapes how we treat others. The episode closes with encouragement around what God is doing in the next generation through FCA, student ministry, and young adults—reminding listeners that humility isn’t self-deprecation, but rightly placing God at the center of everything.

Living on Purpose - "Be Humble" - 1 Corinthians 13:4; Luke 18:9-14
Pride is often hardest to see in ourselves and easiest to spot in others—a sure sign of our blind spots. Jesus exposes this hidden danger through a parable where pride quietly disguises itself as righteousness. Which character do you see yourself in? Which one would you want to live with, work alongside, or serve under? The invitation is simple, but challenging: embrace humility, recognize your blind spots, and get over yourself.

This episode of Beyond Sunday captures a moment many didn’t expect—when winter weather pushed the church back into a “distanced” rhythm that stirred familiar feelings from years past. Josh Hensley is joined by Justin Eshenbaugh, Cliff Hines, and Cadiz Campus Pastor Steve Buttram for a thoughtful, funny, and honest conversation about unexpected worship moments, strange prayer locations, and how God still meets His people when gathering looks different than planned. Through a reflective game and shared stories, they explore how worship and faithfulness can show up in ordinary spaces—living rooms, kitchens, editing bays, and quiet mornings—often in ways that are just as meaningful as being in the room together.
The conversation then moves into deeper territory, unpacking the tension between envy and contentment through the lens of Kevin Lee’s recent message. The group talks candidly about comparison, ambition, gratitude, and humility—how envy acts like a warning light in the heart, and how contentment is something practiced, not stumbled upon. With encouragement rooted in Scripture and real life, the episode invites listeners to recognize what God has already placed in their hands and to walk faithfully with it, while also looking ahead to what’s coming next at New Work Fellowship, including the rescheduled Out of the Box serving opportunity.

Living on Purpose - "Live Contentment" - 1 Corinthians 13:4; Philippians 2:5-8
What truly drives the way we relate to others—contentment or craving? Jesus warned of the danger of envy, experienced its harm firsthand, and yet lived with deep, unmistakable contentment. Though he lived simply, without even a place to lay his head, peace marked his life. That contentment is felt by those who follow him. As Paul reminds us in Philippians 2, Jesus laid aside everything to take up the Way of Love—and calls us to embrace that same heart and mindset.

This week on the Beyond Sunday podcast, Josh Hensley is joined by Michael Shearon, Steve Buttram, and Paxton Redd for a conversation that starts light and ends deep. A playful game about bizarre home remedies—passed down from grandmas, old wives, and questionable logic—opens the door to a much bigger idea: people will try almost anything when they’re desperate to be made whole. That humor sets the stage for reflecting on Sunday’s message and the human longing for healing, restoration, and belonging.
The discussion then turns toward Jesus’ interaction with the leper in Mark 1, exploring the difference between healing and cleansing, why Jesus touched someone considered untouchable, and what true kindness looks like when compassion moves us to action. The team also wrestles with a listener’s question about why Jesus sometimes told people not to share their miracle and closes with a thoughtful, hope-filled conversation about unanswered prayers for healing—reminding listeners that faith is not measured by outcomes, and that for those in Christ, healing is never out of reach, even if it doesn’t come the way we expect.

Living on Purpose - "Show Kindness" - Mark 1:40-42
Kindness is patience put into action. Jesus shows this in His encounter with the leper—seeing him, listening to him, and even touching him. More than healing his body, Jesus restored his dignity and reconnected him to others. Simple acts of kindness—a word, a touch, a moment of listening—may last only seconds, but their impact can echo for a lifetime. Are you living with intentional kindness?

This week on the Beyond Sunday podcast, Josh Hensley, Michael Shearon, April Oatts, and Hannah Buttram gather around the table for a wide-ranging conversation that’s thoughtful, funny, and deeply rooted in everyday faith. A listener-submitted question sparks an honest discussion many people quietly wrestle with at the start of a new year: Where do you even begin when it comes to reading the Bible? The conversation explores different starting points, personal rhythms, and why Scripture is meant to shape us—not overwhelm us.
The episode also takes a turn toward missions with a fun game that highlights upcoming trips and reminds us that God is at work everywhere—from small towns to global cities. Along the way, the team reflects on how faith shows up in different cultures, why presence matters more than pressure, and how mission isn’t just about going far, but faithfully loving right where you are. It’s an encouraging listen that blends wisdom, laughter, and a fresh vision for how God invites His people to join what He’s already doing.

LIVING ON PURPOSE - Begin with Patience (1/11/26)

Living on Purpose - "Begin with Patience" - 1 Corinthians 13:4; Luke 8:40-56
Patience is one of the first casualties of our hurried, self-focused lives. We struggle to be patient with our families, coworkers, and even strangers because we are busy and convinced our time is too important to give away. Yet patience may be the hardest—and most essential—habit to cultivate. In this episode, we see how Jesus, even in the most urgent and demanding moments of His life, moved through the pressure of crowds and suffering people with grace, focus, and deep love. At the heart of His patience was a clear understanding of time and a willingness to share it. If we hope to truly love others, patience isn’t optional—it’s foundational.
